Artist Statement
The Self Sabotage collection are photos that I took of people in uncomfortable positions. The photos will present four sets of two: one closeup picture of the subject in a visibly uncomfortable position, and another that reveals they are causing their own discomfort. The pictures are vibrant and filled with enticing saturated colors. The body positions are dramatic and the facial expressions are emotional. My inspiration came from my discussions with my friends on how we often self sabotage ourselves in life. I thought my collection could visibly represent that sometimes we are the cause of our own demise. I display my pictures digitally because I can control how viewers will see my photos. I put my collection on my website and place them one-by-one in the center of the webpage. The text above the photos provide instructions: Hover your mouse on each image for the reveal. The initial photos display the closeups and once the mouse hovers over the image, it reveals the zoomed out photo revealing the self-sabotage. If I have a chance to display this collection in a gallery I would use a television display or create lenticular photos that showcase both photos in the set as the viewer moves.
